Laboratory of Computational Engineering was established at the Helsinki University of Technology in August 1996. After the first year the staff of the laboratory has exceeded twenty, with four doctoral level researchers, including one professor and one academy professor, and an increasing number of graduate students. From the beginning of 1998 the laboratory is strengthening its academic faculty by one professor, three internationally well-established professors as adjunct professors (docents), one senior scientist, and one post-doctoral position, thus bringing it to total of eleven.

The research of the laboratory focuses on problems of computational science and engineering, with two overlapping branches, computational information processing and computational physics. The common basis is modeling and visualization of complex physical and technical processes, using approaches such as physical modeling and simulation, or statistical data-driven modeling.

In physical modeling the emphasis is in studying properties of materials at nano- and macroscale, while in statistical modeling the main emphasis is in computational intelligence and artificial neural networks. The third emerging branch of research in the laboratory is cognitive technology, especially the study of human information processing including modeling and applications. This branch is strengthened with one professor position.

Most of the research projects in the laboratory are carried out with external funding from the Academy of Finland or the Technology Development Centre, TEKES. Some of the largest projects are Multimodal Information Processing and Human-Computer Interfaces, Advanced Methods in Neural Network Modeling with Background Knowledge, and Simulation and Modeling of Disordered Materials and Nano-Structures.

The educational activity of the laboratory is focused as major/minor Computational Engineering, which aims to make students capable of doing research with computers and of developing computational methods to solve complex problems on broad field of applications. The courses are also designed to support post-graduate studies.
